Trompe L'oeil. Board Partition With Letter Rack And Music Book
Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts
1668
Cornelius Norbertus Gijsbrechts was the ultimate master of visual trickery in the 17th century, and this 1668 masterpiece is his ultimate party trick. He painted a wooden board covered in letters, sheet music, and newspapers, complete with a heavy blue curtain seemingly pulled back to reveal the clutter. The artist actually worked for the Danish royal court, and this piece was designed to fool the king into thinking these were real objects pinned to a wall. It’s a brilliant example of trompe l'oeil, a style dedicated to deceiving the eye so perfectly that you might find yourself reaching out to grab one of those wax-sealed envelopes!
