Cottages at Letherhead Surrey
Cornelius Varley captures a quiet, rustic scene of thatched cottages nestled among trees in Surrey. A lone figure pushes a wheelbarrow along a winding dirt path, adding a touch of everyday life to this peaceful landscape. Varley, a founding member of the Old Watercolour Society, was known for his detailed topographical drawings and his invention of the 'graphic telescope,' a device to help artists capture perspective accurately. This gentle, atmospheric sketch showcases his skill in rendering light and texture using simple washes.
