The Day Dream
1880
Dante Gabriel Rossetti captured his muse, Jane Morris, in a state of total reverie for this 1880 masterpiece. Dressed in a shimmering, emerald-green gown that practically melts into the surrounding foliage, she holds a book of honeysuckle while gazing dreamily into the distance. Rossetti was absolutely obsessed with Jane's distinctive features—like her thick neck and heavy-lidded eyes—and used her as the model for many of his most famous late works. The painting is a quintessential example of the Pre-Raphaelite obsession with rich, saturated colors and romantic, overgrown nature.
