River Landscape in Wales
ca. 1850
David Cox captures the raw, untamed beauty of the Welsh countryside in this sweeping landscape from around 1850. Rushing waters tumble over a foreground of jagged, sun-bleached rocks, leading the eye toward a cluster of tiny cottages dwarfed by the massive, craggy mountains behind them. The dramatic, billowing clouds and loose, atmospheric brushwork show why Cox was a master of British watercolor and a true pioneer who paved the way for the Impressionists. You can almost feel the damp mountain air and hear the roar of the river just by looking at it!
