Blackcock
1697
Swedish court painter David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl turned a simple hunting trophy into a dramatic Baroque spectacle in this 1697 masterpiece. Two blackcocks hang upside down by their feet, tied with delicate pink ribbons against a rustic wooden wall that mimics a barn door. Their striking black and white feathers are rendered with incredible detail, making the birds look almost ready to take flight despite their grim fate. It's a perfect example of how Baroque artists found beauty and tension in everyday objects, transforming a dead bird into a study of texture and form.
