Group from the Last Judgment, Angels Carrying the Column of the Flagellation and the Sponge and Ladder of the Crucifixion
Look at this chaotic pile of incredibly muscular angels struggling to haul a giant column and a ladder through the clouds! The text at the bottom gives away the secret: this is an engraving by Domenico del Barbiere, copying a famous section of Michelangelo's massive 'Last Judgment' fresco in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo packed his heavenly scenes with bodybuilder-like figures in twisted, dynamic poses—a hallmark of the Mannerist style that loved drama over calmness. Interestingly, the original fresco was so scandalous for its nudity that the Vatican later hired another artist to paint loincloths over the 'naughty bits,' but this print preserves the raw, unfiltered intensity of Michelangelo's vision.
