Samson and the Lion by Domenico Fiasella

Domenico Fiasella, a Baroque master from Genoa, used this sketch to work out the kinks for a dramatic scene of Samson wrestling a lion. The faint, scratchy lines on blue-grey paper reveal the artist's obsession with anatomy—you can see the muscles bulging as Samson reaches out to grapple with the beast. It’s like looking at a rehearsal for a play; the artist is figuring out the pose and tension before the main performance on a large canvas. These kinds of 'preparatory drawings' were the secret sauce of the Baroque era, allowing artists to experiment with dynamic movement without the pressure of a final masterpiece.
