Dong Qichang

Landscape Album (Seven-leaf Version) P5 by Dong Qichang

Dong Qichang, the Ming dynasty art critic who basically invented the 'Southern School' of painting, created this piece as a homage to a 10th-century master. The calligraphy in the corner reads 'Imitating the brushwork of Beiyuan' (referring to the painter Dong Yuan), showing that for these scholars, channeling old masters was the highest form of creativity. You can see his signature soft, rounded brushstrokes building up the mountains, deliberately avoiding the sharp, rigid lines of professional court painters. It’s a masterclass in 'literati' style—where the idea and the brushwork matter far more than realistic detail.
