Landscape Album (Seven-leaf version) P6
Dong Qichang, a Ming dynasty master who essentially wrote the rulebook for Chinese literati painting, uses soft, dry brushstrokes here to create a waterfall that feels more like calligraphy than a realistic landscape. The inscription in the upper right—signed with his courtesy name Xuanzai—adds a poetic touch about the eternal wind and moon, reading 'The sea wind blows without ceasing, the river moon shines and is born again.' As a champion of the 'Southern School,' he prioritized mood and abstract rhythm over strict detail, turning the rocks and trees into a rhythmic dance of ink and light color.
