Landscape Album (Nine-leaf version) P2
Featuring rugged peaks and a tiny secluded hut, this delicate landscape is a page from an album attributed to the Ming dynasty master Dong Qichang. The calligraphy on the left acts like a 17th-century art review: the writer admits that famous artists Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming were great, but declares that Dong Qichang (referred to as 'Si Weng') was the only true heir to the Yuan masters. Dong Qichang was basically the ultimate art critic of his time, famously categorizing all Chinese painting into 'Northern' and 'Southern' schools—naturally placing his own style in the superior Southern category!
