Landscape Album (Nine-leaf version) P3
Dong Qichang, a Ming Dynasty giant who basically invented the rules for Chinese literati painting, offers a glimpse into his artistic soul with this album leaf. The right side features a misty, monochromatic landscape of rolling hills and gnarly trees, executed with the loose, expressive brushstrokes he championed for the 'Southern School.' The facing page is a poetic tribute in cursive script, where Dong admits he's channeling the spirit of the legendary master Huang Gongwang rather than just copying his look. It’s essentially a 17th-century 'cover song' of a famous masterpiece, showing that for Dong, understanding art history was just as crucial as wielding the brush.
