Landscape Album (Nine Leaves) P9
Dong Qichang, the ultimate art critic of the Ming Dynasty, created this dreamy landscape to show off a specific style of 'cloudy mountains.' On the right, heavy, wet ink washes form a massive, dark peak that looms over a misty river and a tiny, secluded cottage, looking almost like a watercolor that hasn't quite dried. The left side features his elegant calligraphy, where he actually writes about the history of this technique, name-dropping earlier masters like Mi Fu to prove his scholarly bona fides. It's a perfect example of 'literati painting,' where the artist's knowledge and brushwork were valued far more than realistic details.
