Dong Qichang

Landscape on Paper 32x21 P03 by Dong Qichang

Dong Qichang, a Ming Dynasty giant of art, treated painting like a high-stakes game of artistic telephone with the masters of the past. The calligraphy here admits he is 'imitating' the ancient painter Guan Tong, but don't be fooled—he's really showing off his own brilliant, calligraphic brushwork. Notice the tall, spindly trees and the rugged, almost abstract mountains? That's his signature 'literati' style, where the rhythm of the ink matters more than realistic scenery. He believed painting should feel like writing poetry. Tucked in the bottom right is a tiny, simple hut, a classic symbol inviting the viewer to imagine a quiet life of study and tea, far away from worldly chaos.
