Xiaoxiang White Clouds - Painting Core by Dong Qichang

Dong Qichang, the Ming dynasty scholar who essentially wrote the rulebook for Chinese literati painting, creates a misty, dreamlike world here. He depicts the legendary Xiao and Xiang rivers, where mountains seem to float on a sea of white clouds, a classic trope for expressing a scholar's desire to escape worldly affairs. Notice the numerous red seals stamped across the sky—these are collector chops, including several from the Qianlong Emperor, showing this piece was a prized possession of the Qing imperial court. Dong Qichang often claimed to be channeling ancient masters like Dong Yuan (mentioned in the calligraphy), using soft, wet ink washes to achieve this hazy, atmospheric perspective that feels more like a memory than a real place.
