Copy of Mi Fu's Record of Fangyuan Nunnery (Complete Scroll), on silk, 26x200
Dong Qichang, the Ming Dynasty master of calligraphy and painting, created this stunning scroll as a tribute to the Song Dynasty genius Mi Fu. The large characters on the far right announce the 'Record of the Square and Round Hut,' a famous text, followed by a river of flowing, semi-cursive script that stretches for meters. It’s a perfect example of how Chinese artists viewed 'copying' not as plagiarism, but as a deep, respectful dialogue with the past. By mimicking Mi Fu’s energetic style, Dong was proving he had mastered the ancients before forging his own path.
