Landscape by Dr. Thomas Monro

Dr. Thomas Monro might be best known as the chief physician to King George III, but he was also a massive art enthusiast who basically ran a free art school in his home. This moody landscape, with its gnarled trees leaning over a misty expanse, shows his own hand at work, using broad, expressive strokes to capture an atmospheric, almost dreamlike quality. Monro famously invited young artists like J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Girtin to copy drawings at his house, essentially shaping the future of British landscape painting while sketching scenes like this one himself.
