Recollection of J.R. Cozen’s of Nemi
between 1790 and 1820
Perched atop a dramatic, shadowy cliff, a lonely ruined tower overlooks a serene lake under a sweeping, cloud-filled sky. Dr. Thomas Monro, a physician with a massive passion for art, created this moody landscape as a tribute to the legendary watercolorist John Robert Cozens. In fact, Monro ran a famous 'copying house' in London where he paid teenage prodigies like J.M.W. Turner to copy Cozens' drawings by candlelight! This practice helped shape the entire course of British landscape painting, turning a doctor's hobby into a masterclass for future geniuses.
