Companion Panel from Main Reredos, Church of Sanctuario, Chimayo
1935-1942
Nested rectangular frames in shades of pink, grey, and teal create a bold, geometric border around a central square featuring a golden sheaf of wheat. The wheat springs from a stylized teal vase tied with a flowing red ribbon, set against a soft pink background. Created between 1935 and 1942 by E. Boyd, this piece was a design for a companion panel of the main reredos (altar screen) at the famous Santuario de Chimayo in New Mexico. Boyd, a champion of New Mexican heritage, likely produced this during the WPA Federal Art Project era, blending traditional religious symbolism with a flat, graphic style that feels both folk-art charming and distinctly modern.
