Saint George Slaying the Dragon
Franz Pforr, a founding member of the Nazarene movement, sketched this delicate scene of Saint George slaying the dragon with a medieval flair that was revolutionary for his time. Unlike the dramatic, muscular heroes of the Renaissance, Pforr's knight looks almost gentle, perched on a prancing horse while a princess watches nervously from the woods. Pforr and his friends actually dressed up in medieval costumes and lived like monks to recapture the 'purity' of early art, though tragically, he died of tuberculosis at just 24 years old. This drawing captures that dreamy, linear style the Nazarenes loved, focusing on clear outlines rather than heavy shading.
