Brothel Scene (1877)
Degas pulls back the curtain on the unglamorous reality of Parisian nightlife in this raw, sketchy scene. A woman slumps heavily over a table, her face buried in her arms in sheer exhaustion, while a man leans back in his chair, seemingly passed out or lost in thought, with a lonely bottle standing between them. Unlike the polished ballerinas he’s famous for, these figures are caught in a moment of vulnerable fatigue, rendered with frantic, scribbled lines that feel almost like a secret glimpse into a private room. Degas created a whole series of these brothel scenes, fascinated by the raw humanity and tired bodies behind the closed doors of 19th-century Paris.
