Dancer with a Fan
ca. 1890-95
Degas was practically obsessed with ballerinas, producing over 1,500 works featuring them throughout his career! Here, he captures a dancer in a candid moment, perhaps backstage, fanning herself after a rigorous routine. Notice how the sketchy, energetic lines of her floral tutu contrast with the dark, scribbled background—it's like she's vibrating with leftover energy from the dance. He often used pastels and charcoal to get those soft, blended colors and sharp outlines that oil paint just couldn't achieve, giving the scene a dreamy, fleeting quality typical of Impressionism.
