Dancers in the Rehearsal Room with a Double Bass by Edgar Degas, ca. 1882-85

Edgar Degas loved capturing the unglamorous, behind-the-scenes reality of ballet, and this piece is a perfect example. Instead of a polished stage performance, we see a candid rehearsal room where a massive double bass dominates the foreground, almost looking like a forgotten prop. In the background, ballerinas stretch, adjust their colorful tutus, and chat, completely unaware of being watched. Degas framed the scene like a modern snapshot, cutting off the edges to make you feel like you're just peeking into their private world.
