Dancer, Crossed Arabesque

Dancer, Crossed Arabesque by Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas was absolutely obsessed with ballerinas, sketching them thousands of times to capture their fleeting movements and anatomy. Here, he captures a dancer mid-pose in an 'arabesque croisée,' with her leg extended high and body leaning forward in a delicate balance. The loose, energetic lines show he was more interested in the mechanics of the dance than a polished portrait. You can even see him label the pose in French right on the paper, acting almost like a scientist studying a rare species in motion!
