Dancers in the Foyer
circa 1901
Edgar Degas captures a rare, unguarded moment backstage, showing two exhausted ballerinas slumping on a bench rather than performing on stage. The dancer in the vibrant pink tutu leans back with her hand behind her head, while her companion in green rests her chin on her hand, both looking utterly drained. Degas was obsessed with the Paris Opera Ballet, often sketching them in rehearsal rooms to show the gritty reality behind the glamour. The rough, textured pastel strokes perfectly mimic the fatigue and fleeting nature of their rest.
