Dancers by Edgar Degas, circa 1896

Degas loved capturing dancers in unguarded moments, giving us a voyeuristic peek into the rehearsal room rather than the glamorous stage. We see the girls from behind, their bodies tense with effort as one stretches her arm high, while their reflections in the mirror reveal tired, focused faces. The heavy, dark vertical line of the mirror frame slices through the composition, a classic Degas trick to make the scene feel like a candid snapshot. He was obsessed with the behind-the-scenes reality of the Paris Opera ballet, often sketching furiously to catch these fleeting poses.
