Two Women Chatting by Edgar Degas, circa 1882-1885

Edgar Degas captures a candid, unposed moment between two peasant women in this vibrant sketch. The woman in the foreground, her back turned to us, wears a striking yellow headscarf that pops against the earthy greens and browns of the rural landscape. Though often grouped with the Impressionists, Degas preferred to call himself a realist, and here he focuses on the raw, everyday lives of working-class women rather than pretty Parisian scenes. The rough, chalky texture gives the piece an immediate, almost fleeting energy, as if we've just stumbled upon their private conversation in a field.
