Study of Dancers
Edgar Degas was the ultimate backstage voyeur of the Paris Opera Ballet, far more interested in the gritty reality of rehearsal than the glamour of the final bow. Here, three ballerinas are caught in unposed, candid moments: one bends to tie her slipper, another adjusts her bodice, and a third stands with hands on hips, likely catching her breath. The loose, scratchy charcoal lines and sudden touches of red chalk give the scene a frantic energy, as if Degas was sketching furiously to capture the movement before it vanished. It’s a raw, humanizing look at dancers as working athletes rather than ethereal sprites.
