Reading Under the Lamp (Mr. Cardinal)
1880-83
Edgar Degas was obsessed with the drama of artificial light, and this moody scene captures it perfectly. We see the recurring character M. Cardinal, a grumpy notary, hunched over his desk under the harsh glare of a lamp, while a woman reads quietly in the shadows. Degas created these atmospheric 'dark field' images by inking a metal plate completely black and then wiping away the ink to essentially draw with light. It’s a fascinating glimpse into nocturnal Parisian life that feels incredibly modern for the 1880s.
