Orchestra Musicians
1872
Degas gives us a front-row seat to the Paris Opera, but from a rather unusual vantage point: right behind the orchestra pit. In the foreground, the dark, formal suits and the curling scroll of a double bass create a heavy, shadowy contrast to the fluffy, light-filled ballerinas performing on stage. It's a classic Impressionist move—capturing a candid, behind-the-scenes moment rather than a polished portrait. Degas was absolutely obsessed with ballet dancers, painting them over 1,500 times, often focusing on the unglamorous reality of the rehearsal rather than just the stage magic.
