Singers on the Stage
1877-1879
Edgar Degas was obsessed with the gritty, behind-the-scenes reality of Parisian entertainment, and this sketch captures that electric atmosphere perfectly. Instead of a polished portrait, we see three singers caught in a candid moment on stage—the central figure in a soft pink dress gazes out at the audience while her companions fan themselves, seemingly waiting in the wings. Unlike many Impressionists who painted sunlit landscapes, Degas preferred the artificial glow of theaters and cafés, giving his work a unique, modern edge that feels more like a snapshot than a traditional painting.
