The Curtain by Edgar Degas, c. 1880

Degas was obsessed with the behind-the-scenes world of the Paris Opera, and this piece is a perfect example of his unique perspective. Instead of showing a glamorous performance, he gives us a quirky glimpse of a rehearsal space: a man in a top hat watches a row of dancers' legs peeking out from under a green curtain, while a bear on a leash strolls by on the left. It’s a wonderfully odd mix of high society and circus-like chaos, highlighting Degas's fascination with the unconventional, unpolished moments of ballet life.
