The Rehearsal of the Ballet Onstage
ca. 1874
Edgar Degas was obsessed with capturing the unglamorous reality of ballet rehearsals, showing us the sweaty, awkward moments before the curtain rises. In this scene, dancers in white tutus stretch and chat against a painted backdrop of trees, while a double bass player anchors the foreground. Notice the men sitting casually on the far right—these were wealthy subscribers with special backstage access, adding a slightly voyeuristic layer to the scene. Degas painted over 1,500 works featuring dancers, proving they were his ultimate muse!
