Jean-Baptiste Faure (1830–1914)
1882-83
Meet Jean-Baptiste Faure, a celebrated French opera baritone and one of Édouard Manet’s closest friends and earliest supporters. Manet captures him here with loose, energetic brushstrokes, letting the beige of his coat blend almost seamlessly into the shadowy background. Faure was such a devoted fan that he amassed a huge collection of Manet’s paintings and famously refused to sell them, even when offered a fortune, keeping the masterpieces together for posterity.
