The Spanish Singer
1860
Manet’s breakthrough debut at the 1861 Salon features a scruffy, wide-eyed guitarist strumming away on a simple green bench. Dressed in a mix of theatrical Spanish garb and ragged clothes, the singer looks caught mid-performance, with a stray onion and a clay jug resting on the dusty floor nearby. This vibrant, earthy portrait shocked the Parisian art world with its bold realism and loose brushwork, helping to launch the Impressionist movement by proving that everyday characters could be just as compelling as classical heroes. Today, it hangs proudly in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
