The Little Cavaliers
1861-62
Manet created this lively scene of dashing young men in 17th-century Spanish attire during his early years, heavily inspired by a trip to Spain and his obsession with Velázquez. Though he was just starting out, you can already see his loose, energetic sketching style that would later help launch Impressionism. These 'little cavaliers' aren't actually little—they're full-grown men, but the nickname stuck to distinguish this etching from his larger paintings of similar subjects. It's a fantastic glimpse into the artist's playful experimentation before he became the rebellious father of modern art.
