Blossom of Pain by Edvard Munch, 1898

Most people know Edvard Munch for 'The Scream,' but this 1898 piece, 'The Blossom of Pain,' shows his obsession with the messy, painful side of life. We see a figure rendered in sickly greens, writhing with an arm thrown back, seemingly in the throes of intense suffering. Beside them towers a tall stem with a vibrant red flower, which art historians often interpret as a symbol for the 'blossoming' of pain—specifically the agony of childbirth or menstruation. It’s a raw, Symbolist image that proves Munch was the master of emotional angst.
