Self-Portrait with the Spanish Flu
1919
Edvard Munch painted this haunting self-portrait after surviving the devastating Spanish Flu pandemic in 1919. Sitting gaunt and pale in a yellow armchair, he wraps himself in a heavy, striped blanket, his face ghostly and hollowed out by illness. The swirling, chaotic brushstrokes and sickly green and orange hues perfectly capture the feverish delirium and vulnerability of the moment. It's a raw, honest document of survival from the artist famous for 'The Scream', showing that even he wasn't immune to the world's crises.
