Self-Portrait
1886
Young Edvard Munch stares out with a haunting, almost feverish intensity in this early self-portrait from 1886. Created just before he would paint his famous screaming figure, you can already see the raw, emotional brushstrokes that would define his entire career. The dark, shadowy background seems to swallow the figure, leaving only his pale, troubled face and bright eyes to pierce through the gloom. It is a fascinating glimpse into the mind of an artist who was already grappling with the deep anxieties that would later explode onto the canvas.
