Tingletangle

Edvard Munch

1895

Tingletangle by Edvard Munch, 1895

Munch transports us straight into a 'Tingeltangel'—a slang term for a noisy, low-brow variety show popular in 1890s Oslo. A dancer in a striking red dress commands the center, her white veil swirling like a ghost around her, while a motley crew of bohemians watches with a mix of fascination and detachment. The loose, sketchy lines and washes of color give the scene a fleeting, almost drunken atmosphere, reflecting the artist's own immersion in the city's rebellious artistic circle. It’s a far cry from his famous screaming figure, showing instead the vibrant, messy life of the Kristiania Bohemians.
