Men Turning towards the Sun
1911-14
Edvard Munch created this vibrant study as part of his massive mural project for the University of Oslo's assembly hall around 1911. You can see two figures—one large and green, the other smaller and white—stretching desperately towards a blinding light source on the right. It's a raw, energetic sketch that shows the artist working out the composition before painting the final, monumental version. The loose brushstrokes and swirling colors capture the feeling of being overwhelmed by the sun's power, a theme Munch was obsessed with as he sought to bring light and life into public spaces.
