The Bride
1828
Edward Calvert's 'The Bride' captures a dreamy, pastoral vision straight out of a myth, created in 1828. A serene, nude woman stands beneath a heavy vine of grapes, gently guiding a stray lamb, while a distant shepherd watches over the rolling hills with a star-tipped staff. Calvert was a devoted follower of William Blake, and you can totally see that mystical, poetic influence in the incredibly fine, swirling lines of this print. It's a beautiful example of early 19th-century British art that blends classical mythology with a deeply spiritual, almost utopian view of nature.
