Tilbury Fort
Edward Francis Burney, daughter of the famous novelist Fanny Burney, captured this serene view of the Thames estuary with a delicate touch. The massive, billowing cloud dominates the sky, dwarfing the distant spires of Tilbury Fort on the left bank. It’s a peaceful scene that belies the fort's history as a major defensive structure against invasion, particularly the Spanish Armada in 1588. The wash of pale blues and greys creates a hazy, atmospheric distance, and you can even see the title 'Tilbury Fort' scribbled in the bottom right corner, a common practice for topographical sketches of the era.
