Gateway Ammerscheiner
Edward Millington Synge invites us to peek through a crumbling stone archway into a quiet village scene, likely in the Alsace region given the title. The heavy, dark textures of the ruined gate in the foreground create a dramatic frame for the lighter, sunlit street and tiny figures beyond. Working in the academic tradition, Synge uses scratchy, energetic lines—typical of etching—to give the ancient stone a rough, tactile feel that contrasts with the peaceful life inside the walls.
