Stella e Garitta, Putney
Edwin Edwards captures a moody view of the Thames, framing the famous Star and Garter Hotel through a canopy of gnarled trees that cast long, dramatic shadows across the grass. You can actually read the hotel's name on the building across the water—a place that was a legendary bohemian hangout for 19th-century artists and writers. Edwards, a champion of the Etching Revival, uses incredibly fine lines to create the shimmering reflection on the river and the rough texture of the tree bark. It’s a peaceful, almost melancholic snapshot of Victorian London before the hotel was famously turned into a hospital for WWI veterans.
