1864
Edwin Forbes sketched this quiet scene right in the middle of the American Civil War, capturing the Jericho Mills along the North Anna River in Virginia. In the foreground, a lone soldier carefully crosses a makeshift pontoon bridge, while others gather near the rustic wooden mill buildings nestled in the trees. Forbes was an official sketch artist for the Union Army, and his work gives us a rare, ground-level view of daily life during the grueling Overland Campaign of 1864.
