Prisoners captured at Woodstock, Va.
1862
Edwin Forbes, a sketch artist traveling with the Union Army during the Civil War, captured this somber lineup of four prisoners shortly after their capture at Woodstock, Virginia in 1862. The men stand with a weary slouch, hands buried deep in their pockets, wearing tattered coats and a mix of headgear ranging from flat caps to wide-brimmed slouch hats. You can even see patches on the trousers of the man on the far right, a gritty detail Forbes included to document the harsh reality of soldiering. These quick field sketches, known as 'life studies,' were later turned into engravings for newspapers, giving folks back home an unglamorous, honest look at the war.
