軍隊における聖パトリックデー――ラクダレース
1863
Edwin Forbes captured a surprisingly rowdy moment from the American Civil War in this lively 1863 sketch. Instead of a grim battle scene, we see a chaotic mule race organized for St. Patrick's Day, with soldiers cheering as riders struggle to stay on bucking animals. One mule is mid-leap, another rider is tumbling off into a ditch, and the whole scene is full of energy and humor. Forbes served as an official artist for the Union Army, sketching scenes of camp life to send back to Northern newspapers like Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, offering a rare glimpse of soldiers letting off steam.
