Egon Schiele

1918

장식 by Egon Schiele, 1918

Egon Schiele, usually known for his jagged and intense portraits of the human body, takes a surprisingly playful and abstract turn in this 1918 piece. Bold, thick black lines form a shape that resembles a stick figure wearing a giant hoop or perhaps a stylized monogram, all set against a washed-out blue background that looks like aged parchment. Created just months before his tragic death from the Spanish flu at age 28, this work reveals a different, almost primitive side of the Expressionist master, stripping form down to its barest geometric essentials.
