Death and Girl
1915
Egon Schiele painted this haunting embrace in 1915 just before being drafted into World War I, casting himself as the skeletal figure of Death clutching his muse, Wally Neuzil. The woman, dressed in a striking red-patterned gown, turns her face away in a mix of resignation and sorrow, wrapped tightly in chaotic white sheets. Originally based on an earlier 1911 composition, Schiele reworked it to reflect the looming shadow of war and his own mortality. It's a raw, emotional farewell that perfectly captures the anxious energy of the Expressionist movement.
