達雷特(希伯來字母)

達雷特(希伯來字母) by El Lissitzky, 1919

El Lissitzky turns a traditional Passover song into a geometric fever dream in this 1919 print. This piece, titled 'Dalet' (the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet), illustrates a verse from 'Had Gadya' (One Little Goat) where a stick beats a dog. A terrified, pug-like creature cowers on a black hill while a giant red stick and a tree branch float menacingly above it under an arch of Hebrew script. It’s a wild mix of ancient folklore and avant-garde Suprematism, created right in the middle of the Russian Civil War.
